Beauty In Curves

If you find that you are particularly drawn to curved interior designs and furniture, don’t be alarmed: it’s scientifically proven that the human brain has an affinity for curves.

An experiment in 2010 by neuroscientists at the Zanvyl Krieger Mind/Brain Institute and members at the Walters Art Museum sought to discover which shapes were most pleasing to the brain. Their belief prior to undertaking the experiment was that the shapes people prefer are those most visually exciting, leading to more concentrated activity in the brain. They also wondered whether humans gravitate to shapes that spark a chain of fluctuating weak and strong brain activity.

Understanding the brain’s approach to shapes

As part of the study, the team drew ten different sets of images, which were then placed as part of an exhibition in the Walters Art Museum. Each set featured 25 three-dimensional variations of a shaped sculpture by Jean Arp. Arp’s sculpture was chosen because his abstract form of artistry has never been designed to represent specific objects. Visitors to the exhibition donned pairs of 3D glasses and were asked to comment on their ‘most liked’ and ‘least liked’ shape.

The outcome of the experiment was that the majority of respondents preferred shapes with modest, inoffensive curves rather than sharp points. Furthermore, the magnetic brain imaging scans of participants proved the scientists’ initial hypothesis to be correct; with curved shapes generating more powerful brain activity.

Subconsciously, humans are drawn to balanced or symmetrical designs that are more aesthetically pleasing than their abstract counterparts. Symmetry for interior design can bring a familiarity and a harmonious feel to a space, regardless of its specific style.

A simple way to create clean and symmetrical curved internal walls and linings

V-Cut’s flexible plasterboard creates those symmetrical curves, both convex and concave, for residential and commercial environments. The slotted plasterboard can go where other plasterboards can’t; from curved ceiling bulkheads and round column casings to curved walls and linings for a stylish and continuous flush finish.

Whatever the site framework, the flexible plasterboard can wrap closely to the frame at exceptionally tight radii, without any force. If you’re looking to make an interior design statement with your internal walls and ceilings, our decorative curved surface flexiboards are a low-maintenance option. They are easy to install and will follow the contours of the room to create beautiful curved lines.
